Top Texts for September 2022

Steve Smith has chosen a wonderful mix of texts for September

Julia and the Shark

by Kiran Millwood Hargrave and Illustrated by Tom de Freston

A captivating adventure story written so beautifully  and poetically. The images conjured up in your mind are enhanced by the unique illustrations and overlays which take us on Julia’s journey with her mother and their quest for the elusive Greenland Shark.

A wonderful exploration of family and friendship that you will treasure.

A Day in the Life of a Caveman, a Queen and Everything In Between

by Mike Barfield & Jess Bradley

History on the form of a graphic novel! A fantastic way to help children develop a broad and interlinked knowledge of human history in bitesize chunks with amusing illustrations.

Not a book packed solely with facts, but a fun exploration of the life and times of the historical figures and events that have shaped today’s world.

The Book of Not Entirely Useful Advice

by A.F. Harrold and Illustrated by Mini Grey

A fantastic book of random advice about sausages, school life, belts and breakfasts from one of my favourite poets. This book is a proven gateway into poetry and fiction for reluctant readers and a source of fun and amusement for many others.

Children will enjoy reading and performing the weird and wacky poems that are perfectly complemented by Mini Grey’s colourful illustrations.
