Lucy Courtenay

Lucy Courtenay has written over 100 books, both as herself and as a team writer on series such as Beast Quest.

What was your favourite childhood book and why?

I adored Enid Blyton’s mystery series and school books, but my absolute favourites were Willard Price’s animal adventure books. I learned a lot of random facts about animals that I still remember today, including the ever-useful advice to close your eyes when you’re within six feet of a spitting cobra or it will spit poison straight into your eyeballs.

Which of your own books is your favourite and why?

Such a tough question! I love the book I’m writing the most, until I write the next one. But there is a special place in my heart for my teen romance Movie Night because it feels 100% me.

Why do you choose to read?

To escape, explore, imagine, time-travel. To put myself in horrifying danger from the comfort of my sofa. To indulge my secret dreams of having magic in my fingers, of finding worlds inside cupboards. To take a break from life’s wind and rain. To gather fresh ideas and energy. Books are the human equivalent of a phone charger. Just plug me in.
