Clippa 2023

CLiPPA (Centre for Literacy in Primary Poetry Award) is the only award for published poetry for children in the UK.

A Schools Shadowing Scheme  is available to promote the teaching of poetry in schools. To assist schools there are teaching resources for all the shortlisted books and videos of the poets performing their poems. There is a Shadowing video to tell you more and a ‘What We Know Works’ Poetry booklet too https://clpe.org.uk/poetryline/clippa

Winner: Marshmallow Clouds. By Ted Kooser amd Connie Wanek, illustrated by Richard Jones (Walker), ISBN:  978-1529507072)

Described by judges as “an outstanding poetry book with beautifully crafted poems full of evocative imagery and wonderfully resonant illustrations. It’s an exceptional example of poetry published for children, speaking to children of all ages about the world around them and their place within it. A freewheeling romp through the world of imagery and metaphor, this quietly startling collection is framed by the four elements and divided into thoughtfully-curated sections, exploring art and reality, fact and fancy.

Highly Commended: Choose Love written by Nicola Davies and Illustrated by Petr Horacek. (Graffeg) ISBN: 978-1802583779

Choose Love provides insight into the real-life experiences of refugees forced to leave their homes to face an unknown future. In the judges’ words, it is ‘Angry, compassionate, campaigning and written from the heart’. They also describe it as ‘humane and uplifting – what poetry is for’.
