We had a great first session at Moon Lane Books for our OU/UKLA Teachers' Reading Group. As well as outlining the research background, introducing the website and the planned format of the sessions, we shared favourite books which included Krindlekrax by Philip Ridley and a lesser-known picturebook from Maurice Sendak – The Moon Jumpers. We shared current pedagogy around reading for pleasure – comments included: Developing reading corners, holiday reading challenge, show and tell favourite book, daily informal storytime and 'get caught reading'!
There was lots of passion for reading aloud and awareness that it creates a community in the classroom, although some in upper KS2 were experiencing difficulty in finding time. We explored the value of this, further drawing on the web resources. The hardest, though most enjoyable, part for the teachers was probably choosing a book from the selection to read for next time! Oh, and of course we started with a story – one of my current favourites – Grumpy Frog by Ed Vere.
One teacher brought some notes along to share with us. They can be downloaded below.
