At the CLPE, we are firm believers in the transformative power of books. We know that children who are confident readers and enjoy literature are more likely to enjoy academic success and develop the social, emotional and mental resilience that ultimately leads to better life chances. Through our work, we seek to ensure that all children have the opportunity to experience this power and the transformative benefits. Creating opportunities for connections is key. This is why it is imperative that we offer children a breadth and range of books in which nuanced, multi-faceted, well-developed and authentic representations of characters from all walks of life populate the pages. This study informs our work with publishers and all stakeholders in terms of working towards these aims.
